    A Sad Day

    Bryan's dad died Friday night.
    Maybe another time I'll go into detail about some of it, or maybe Bryan will, but for now let's just leave it at that. There are a couple funny things, but I think I'll let B tell that story.
    For right now let's just say it's been rough, but nothing we can't handle.
    The short of it is, we're moving into his dad's house. With his sister, who lives there already. More on that later.
    I called my boss Saturday morning to let her know that I won't be in for at least a couple days. She said she was sorry, then asked if I had my shift covered. Well, no... not like this was a planned time off or anything. It makes me not want to put in my notice- just quit. Do you have your shift covered??? What kind of question is that to ask someone who's father-in-law-type has just died? Anyway, she left it up to me to call the store and have someone call the other assistant to cover. It just doesn't sit right with me. I don't care if she was on her way to a bowling tournament when I called her. When I talk to her next I'm going to tell her that I won't be back to work before Friday, and only then because I promised the deli manager I'd cover for her while she takes her last vacation days- but that I only want to work a couple days the following week as well. I've got too much to do between packing up our apartment and cleaning and decluttering the house, not to mention the actual moving.
    There's just alot going on right now. I might not be thinking straight. I don't know.

    What I do know is that a really wonderful man is no longer with us. Before Bryan and I even met in person, he told me he couldn't wait for me to meet his dad, that I would like him and we'd get along. He was right.

    Remember when I first moved down here? I got into town in the middle of the night, drove to Bryan's dad's house because that's where Bryan was living. Bryan left for work a couple hours after I got there. I had to be up to go meet the landlord here an hour or so after that. Bryan's dad knocked at the bedroom door to make sure I was up. When I got dressed I walked out to the living room. His dad was sitting in what we've come to know as 'his' chair. He offered me coffee. I don't drink it, but I sat down on the couch to visit with him for a couple minutes before I had to leave. Right from the very first minute I met him he made me feel welcome. He never judged.
    When we went to visit, I never arrived without hugging him, never left without hugging him. He came to expect it and would sometimes reach toward me first. The last few months I never hugged him good bye without telling him I loved him. And I did. And the thing is, I know he loved me too. B has said I was the daughter-in-law he wished he had.
    I remember one time, not so long ago, me and Dad B were sitting in the living room talking. He had just told me one of his many stories and we were laughing. Then he said "Bet you never thought you'd ever have a... " and he paused for a minute then kind of cleared his throat. "Bet you never thought you'd meet anyone like me, huh?" But we both know he almost said "...have a father-in-law..." It was like that.
    When we were at the funeral home today making arrangements, the mortician guy was putting the obit together. He'd copied some of it from B's moms' obit... but because he'd heard us talking before we went in the office, he'd changed the Storm's name to mine. After the whole thing was put together, I suggested it would probably be best if my name was taken out. I ... well, I .. I just thought it would be wrong. And just leaving the storm's name out of it would piss her off enough, didn't want to send her into a rage and wind up with her fist stuck inside my head or anything. I said "I know what I meant to him, what he was to me, and that's good enough."
    And it is.
    Take time to tell those you love that you do love them. Don't wait.

    Something Wicked This Way Comes

     Oh Lord... a mighty bad storm blew my way last night. It came from the west, but just a little west. Caught me almost completely off guard, too. Thankfully it didn't last long, but it sure did leave a lasting impression. It wasn't scary, just... well, I was left confuddled. And yes, that is a word... I'm using it, so it must be.

    Today I can look back on it with more clarity. No understanding, but at least I see it for what it was now. It was evil. And it came to me through the phone line. Rather like a banshee. Yes, that must be what it was. There was plenty of wailing and wicked screeching. And if the voice had had a body, it probably would have been doing some form of evil dance in the yard with arms flailing and feet bouncing off the ground. Yes, I'm sure it would have been quite the spectacle, for sure.

    She called. The evil female human form that the wonderful man in my life is divorcing. She's obviously not happy about it. And because she's such a treasure, it must be MY fault he left her. Yes, I must be the one to blame.

    You see, Bryan went to his granddaughters' choir recital. Although I would have liked to have gone, The Evil One informed the granddaughter that if that woman (me) went, then she wasn't going. Yes, she's a real grown-up, she is.  Then, at the last minute the granddaughter called her grandpa and told him that grandma wasn't going, so she would like me to go. This was at quarter til the time the recital began. There was no way I could throw myself together in time to attend, so I sent the camera along and wishes for a good night. Then I settled onto the floor with dozens of girl scout cookie boxes in front me in need of being sorted and bagged.

    Bryan's cell phone rang. He had left it here on the charger. I got up to see who it was. The first time it was his second job. The second time it said "The Storm". I gingerly walked away, knowing that her evil is such that it could transcend the confines of the cell phone if I got too close. I shuddered and sat back down. Not even two minutes later, the house phone rang. We don't have caller ID. I considered letting the answer machine pick up, then thought  there's no way it's her; she has no reason to call here.

    *insert evil erie music*

    I picked up the phone.

    "Hello?" I say, my voice cheery.

    Then WHAM! My ears are assaulted. It's her!!!! And I have nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. I don't have my talisman for protection! Oh no!!

    I could feel the evil vibrations thru the phone, even though it's cordless. It was a creepy sensation, much like the feeling you get when you let your mind wander late at night in the woods. Except this time the evil was real. And it was trying to wiggle it's way into my head thru  my ears.

    I listened while she ranted and raved and screamed and yelled. I'm thinking what the hell? I'm just sitting in my home, minding my own business. She continues. Was it hours or did it just feel that long? Then... then she takes a breath for her next assault. I move in. Smiling, I say "Well, aren't you just a friendly person? What a shame we can't be best friends!" Lordy, lordy, lordy! That probably wasn't a smart thing to do, but it sure did make me feel good. I could feel her face turn bright red, could almost feel the steam spewing forth from her ears and nostrils, and I sure did hear the fire sprouting from her mouth! Wow! She continues with more ranting and raving and screaming and yelling, all the while I'm standing in the kitchen thinking what the hell?? She's a raving lunatic!

    It felt like it lasted forever, but it was probably only five minutes. Before she hung up on me, after threatening to kick my ass if she ever sees me, she told me she was glad I "took him away from her". Then she totally dissed Bryan, as if she was being a good person and giving me fair warning or something, but the disdain in her voice for both of us was quite obvious, so I don't think she was really being as friendly as she thought. The yelling didn't make it sound too much like a friendly warning, either. Or, hey, maybe it was just me.

    When the storm had passed, I replaced the phone on the cradle and went back to sorting cookies. I was feeling a little shaky, but that's to be expected after having come ear to voice with pure evil. I think coming face to face with Satan would be easier, at least he'd pretend to be nice. Anyway, I had just sat down when the phone rang again, perhaps ten minutes later. My first thought was : Oh no! What does she want to rant about this time?

    It wasn't her. It was Bryan's son, wanting to know if his dad was here. We talked for maybe three or four minutes, I asked if he was okay and explained that I was a little concerned because of what had just transpired. He assured me he was fine. But can anyone really be fine living with evil? But, that's what they're used to. They'd probably be more scared if she became..   sane.

    When Bryan got home, having already been warned by his other son about the phone call, I hugged him and told him how sorry I was that he'd had to put up with that for all those years. Then he listened to the voicemail that she left on his cell, and let me listen. Lordy, lordy, lordy! She was yelling at him to answer his phone! She was talking to his voicemail, duh. How insane is that? Does she not realize that voicemail can't be heard until after the person has dialed it??? Not like it was an answer machine. Maybe Evil just doesn't know the difference?

    So, that was my night. How was  yours?

    March 15

    quickie... or not....

    Bryan did his stand up Tuesday night at the comedy club. Open Mic night. He choked a little bit, but actually turned it into funny. I was and am very proud of him. He's written more about it in depth on his regular blog and on the blog he's dedicated to his stand up career. Both can be found here.

    I had to go to work after the show. In fact, I was an hour late, but I had already made arrangements for the second shifter to stay until I got there. Sweet girl.

    I guess a new girl/woman/female at any rate, has been hired. She starts today, Thursday, but will be getting trained to work thirds. Good. I don't mind pulling an occassional third, but I don't want to get sucked into pulling two or three a week. I hate sleeping until four or five in the afternoon. I'm more of a morning person. And besides that, third shift at a gas station out in the middle of nowhere is a long, lonely shift.

    At least there's a radio. The day shift people have it on country. I switch it to Oldies. The last thing I want when I'm there alone is whining on the radio. Seriously. Nor do I want to hear a bunch of screaming and yelling rock ballads or whatever although that's usually what's on my radio in the car or the truck.

    So, inside the store I have music. Playing quietly, usually just loud enough for me to hear behind the counter. About every hour or so a couple customers will come in. They usually time it so they're pulling in right after I get a couple puffs of a cigarette and have to stub it out. Bastards.

    I get alot of smoke breaks on third, though. Most are interupted, like I just said. In fact, the sure fire way to get customers is to step outside and light up even if it's been quiet for an hour and most normal people are home in bed. But, on the rare occassion when I'm not interupted, I get to sit out in the calm, quiet middle of the night in the middle of nowhere... and think about vampires and zombies and every Stephen King novel I've ever read. Will I make it back inside before the zombies can get me? Will the door lock sufficiently to keep them out? Vampires can go inside a public building uninvited. Uh oh. Do I have anything that would work as a weapon? I hope it doesn't get foggy, 'cause weird alien things come out in the fog. But at least there's enough food in the store, and water and other assorted beverages that as long as I can keep the evil thingys outside, I won't starve or anything for awhile. Hell, I even have a kitchen in the back! Suppose I could turn on the fryer and toss the baddies' head first into it. But wait.. there are some big rigs in the back and the construction of the building isn't that great if they come to life on their own. Uh oh. I'm fucked.   Right about then a customer will pull in and it's back to work. Whew. Made it through a life and death situation unharmed again.

    And now that I'm back to days again, starting Friday for a couple days at least, the weather is going to be crappy. Of course. When it was 75 and 80 I slept all day and missed it. Just the way it goes. Now it's going to be 50  and raining. And I'll want to sleep all day. Yay.

    Anyway, this schedule has my body all whacked out. It's 2am... I'm going to bed. Hopefully I'll be able to get to sleep.

    March 10

    want a bug?

    We've been sick around here since Tuesday or Wednesday. Wednesday I think. Bryan took Wednesday off from work, I went in but left two hours early. He went to work Thursday, I called off. I had Friday off. We're better, but not 100% yet. Started off like the flu, with achy joints and extreme lethargy. Then it changed into some allergy/cold/sinus thingy. I blame the weather. It's 62 today. Not that I'm complaining about the temperature, not at all... just the way it went from chilly to warm so fast. Messes me up.

    We went out last night. To a comedy club, of course. I love going to those. We saw Heywood Banks. OMG! I wasn't feeling great, wasn't sure I really wanted to go out, but boy am I glad I went! That man is hilarious! Had a great time. And the opening act was a guy we saw at another club a couple weeks ago, also very funny.

    After the show, Bryan made good, lol... he made his way around, chit chatting with people in the bar, including the guy who opened the show. There was also someone there he works with. It's nice to be with someone who is such a social butterfly.

    Okay... now don't forget to change your clocks before you go to bed tonight. Or at 2am if you happen to be up. I'll be up. Turns out I'm working third shift tonight. Funny thing... I was working third the last time the time changed, too. Not really complaining about it, gives me more time to sleep and rest before going back to work. And I'll be able to get the books done, as well.

    The third shifter who supposedly got called back to active duty then got out of it... he's the one who's been pulling the no-call/no-shows lately. Guess he called the boss last night a half hour before he was supposed to be there, said he was going to be there. He called again two hours later, an hour after he was supposed to be there, saying he'd be there as soon as he got some packing done. He never showed. So the boss worked 24 hours.  She could have gone home, gotten some rest, had the second shifter call her if the third shifter didnt' show,  but chose to stay.

    Anyway, it goes on, doesn't it? Same old shit, just another day.

    where are the ghostys?

    Talked to the ex today. Pretty decent talk, actually, as far as talks with him go. Happened to get on the discussion of ghosts. As most of you know, my old house was haunted. Well, it seems one of the more 'spirited' ghosts came along with me. Perhaps with a piece of furniture.  I mentioned that a mirror fell off the wall the other night while Bryan and I were watching TV... a mirror that was securely attached to the wall. And when I went to pick it up off the floor, I couldn't help but notice that the screws used to hold it in place were still there.

    Anyhow, this led to a discussion of the ghosts in his apartment. And how he's seen "orbs" in pictures taken there. That my son took a picture of a shadow in his closet. That he- Mr Wonderful- and his friend both saw a young Mexican girl standing in his living room. One who wasn't alive and breathing. I had my son send me the picture of the shadow, and sure enough.. there's a shadow in his closet. A closet that has no mirrors in it.

    This made me want to take a closer look at the pictures I took in that apartment when Bryan and I were there for my son's birthday. Amazing. There are some pictures where I can count up to nearly 20 orbs, others where there are none. So I know it's not my camera, that there was nothing on the lense. All the pictures were taken within minutes of each other. Mostly. I'm going to post some of these pictures... see if you can see the orbs.  You can click on the pictures to enlarge them for a better look.

    look to the right and behind Natalie's head

    I see two here, how many do you see?

    okay, tell me you see none in this one. I dare ya! I count 20.

    again, I see several.

    three? four?

    zero. I don't see any in this picture.

    or in this one.

    Glad I don't live there, lol.

    March 06

    Great Tips...

    but I don't know if any of them really work. Got this in an e-mail, will probably check out a  couple of them.

    Reheat Pizza

    Heat up leftover pizza in a non-stick skillet on top of the stove. Set

    heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy.

    No soggy micro pizza.

    I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works.

    Expanding Frosting

    When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer

    for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes

    with the same amount. You also eat less sugar/calories per serving.

    Reheating refrigerated bread

    To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them

    in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep

    the food moist and help it reheat faster.

    Newspaper Weeds-Away

    Start putting in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers,

    put layers around the plants overlapping as you go, cover with mulch and

    forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic; they

    will not get through wet newspapers.

    Broken Glass

    Use a dry cotton ball to pick up little broken pieces of glass ...

    the fibers catch ones you can't see!

    MINE!!!!!

    If you purchase a new bike for your child, place their picture inside the handle bar

    before placing the grips on. If the bike is stolen and later recovered, remove the

    grip and there is your proof who owns the bike.

    Flexible vacuum

    To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge, add an empty paper

    towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to

    get in narrow openings.

    Reducing Static Cling

    Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress.

    Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and ... voila ... static is gone.

    Measuring Cups

    Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill it with hot water.

    Dump out the hot water, but don't dry the cup. Next, add your ingredient,

    such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.

    Foggy Windshield?

    Hate foggy windshields?

    Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car.

    When the windows fog, rub with the eraser!

    Works better than a cloth!

    Reopening envelope

    If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside,

    just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two.

    Voila! It unseals easily.

    Conditioner

    Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's a lot cheaper than shaving cream

    and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner

    you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair...

    Good-bye Fruit Flies

    To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass fill it 1/2" with Apple Cider Vinegar

    and 2 drops of dishwashing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the

    cup and gone forever!

    Get Rid of Ants

    Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it "home,"

    and can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, esp. if it rains,

    but it works and you don't have the worry about pets or small children

    being harmed!

    Take baby powder to the beach

    Keep a small bottle of baby powder in your beach bag. When you're ready to leave

    the beach sprinkle yourself and kids with the powder and the sand will slide right

    off your skin.

    A Day at The Movies....

    At home.....

    Movie review time.

    Bryan suggested I watch Galaxy Quest. Yes, it's an oldie. But it sure was funny. If you're bored, it's on TV or at your local video store when you're looking around, go ahead and watch it.

    Next on the list is The Devil Wears Prada. Much better than I was expecting. I still wouldn't highly  recomend it, but I'd say watch it if it's on your list.

    And finally.. Farce of the Penguins. OMG! We are going to buy this movie. Do not let young children watch it. I repeat DO NOT let young children watch it, lol. I think it's especially funny if you've watched March of the Penguins (a movie I highly recomend, it's not so much like watching a documentary as it is a really good movie with no speaking parts, lol). Anyhow, the movie itself is funny, but the extras are also pretty damn gut busting. However, language and situations do not lend themselves to anyone easily offended by .... well, foul language and sexual situations that involve animals, lol.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
    What else is going on....??? Hmm... lemme see.... yeah, not much. On the work front - the other assisstant is gone as of tomorrow (Sunday) night. He's being placed in another store. I'll miss him. Especially since it means more sitting on my shoulders now. Hmph. Hired the deli managers' niece, she starts Monday. We'll see how that goes. Good news is that third shifts are now covered again, so I shouldn't have to pull any. Yay. Didn't move down here so I could sleep alone,  y'know. Did enough of that when I was living with Mr Wonderful.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    The weather sucks. Yes, I know.. it sucks everywhere. March sure did come in like a lion. Good. Get this shit out of Mother Nature's system and maybe we can get some good stuff. I don't know about the rest of you, but it's messing with my sinuses something fierce. Medicine isn't working to make the pain go away, so I've been relying on some pain meds to knock me out at night. Otherwise the pain in my head and face and neck wakes me up or keeps me awake. And I get real bitchy when I don't get decent rest.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Back to movies. Seems like every time me and Bry go in to rent a movie or two we wind up buying 3-4 pre-viewed movies as well. We've probably got at least ten or fifteen movies we've bought in the last 3 months that we haven't watched yet. Some are movies I watched before and liked well enough to buy; some are movies he's wanted; others are movies niether of us have seen but thought we might enjoy. Oh, then there's one we both watched a couple weeks ago and bought because he liked it. And, of course, we have the Battlestar Gallactica first season to get thru (birthday present for him).
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Been watching American Idol. So far not real impressed with any of them. I like Melinda and Lakisha and Stephanie. I like Blake and Sundance and Chris S. I think Antonella should have been gone last week as well as Sanjaya. Yes, they look good, but they're not good enough singers to be in the competition.  I didn't watch last season, but if Kat Mcphee and Taylor Hicks were the best, the rest must have really sucked. Then again, the season Fantasia won...  wrong choice there, too. Of course, like Caroldee pointed out, just being on the show in the top 24 gives enough exposure that people can jumpstart a career, and the longer they're on the show, the bigger the jumpstart.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    And back to movies again. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back!!! Okay, in cgi, but they're back! I used to love watching those movies with my boys.  Seriously considering buying them on DVD. All my VHS movies are history, lost with so many other things I left behind, and I had all the turtle movies.
    Been reading the reviews on some movies coming out. Zodiac sounds good. If any of you see it, let me know if it's as good as the reviews, okay? And if we happen to see it first, I'll let you know. Deal?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Enjoy your day!
